The output stage has a low impedance high current output, which enables it to be used with any pre-amp or main amplifier, whether valve or transistor, or even a transformer type volume control (TVC).

The Convergence Phono is also available in a Signature version. The "Signature" version has selected components fitted, plus a few other improvements incorporated that Graham found to improve the audio fidelity even further.

Atlantic 300B Stereo Amplifier

To build a truly magical amplifier when money is not an issue is relatively easy to achieve. To build a truly magical amplifier when you are trying to offer something affordable is a very different matter. Back in 2013 Graham started looking into making an affordable Tron amplifier that would meet a new set of design criteria that he had not looked at before. The amplifier had to be affordable, compact, flexible offering different valve/tube options and still meet all the quality aspects famous in all previous Tron designs.

Graham came up with the Atlantic amplifier. The Atlantic can be made available as a power amplifier and as an integrated amplifier. The first Atlantic was launched at the 2014 Munich show. Each Atlantic is made and tested by Graham ensuring the same level of quality as in his more expensive designs.

Syren II Preamplifier

Syren II Preamplifier

It is just so easy to loose the nuances at the first stage of the amplification and this has driven Graham to work so meticulously on the Syren as a personal project. Graham handcrafts each Syren as an act of passion, which takes him nearly 2 weeks full time (over 70 hours of skilled labour). Probably the most difficult stage of amplification in any system is the first as it is dealing with the most sensitive signal, anything lost at this point will disappear forever. The preamplifier has the primary responsibility of preserving the music signal where the key is to maximise the dynamics and minimise any corruption, which will be magnified further down the signal path. Graham's designs are by their very nature simple and concise, using the shortest possible signal path. A circuit board is used in preference to hard wiring because, when executed properly, it is more effective in reducing noise, resulting in a quieter background allowing more musical information to be heard. As with most things it all comes down to the quality and the execution. All circuit boards are not equal; Tron uses 1.6mm thick rigid boards that help stabilise micro resonances. The tracks are made of very high purity copper and elegantly laid out to minimise the length of the signal path.

The Syren is designed using four carefully divided partitions. These partitions help reduce the disruptive effect of magnetic, mechanical and electrical fields for the critical aspects of the circuit. All the components are oriented spatially to limit interference, and are of the highest quality available. Most are specially made to order and the strip core transformers and chokes are individually hand wound. This guarantees perfect pitch, rich tonal colour, and exposes the subtle timing and harmonic structure of the music, where lesser components corrupt and compress the signal. If you listen to a violin up very close then you can literally hear the harmonious chorus of every tiny resonance, and it is precisely this rich textural musical signature that we are passionate about preserving in combination with the timing and dynamics of the performance, in essence, to deliver the emotion of the music.

The Syren II can be upgraded to the Reference specification to further improve the musical performance from all your musical sources. The output transformers form a critical stage in the amplification and to further improve the Syren II we have specially developed some unique non-standard core material that we keep as proprietary knowledge and simply refer to as exotic. These exotic core transformers help to lift the musical performance and enhance the vibrancy and intimacy of the music, in a way that just makes everything sound more immediate and tactile. We have been a little surprised, but delighted with how much a change in the core of a transformer can make to the musical performance, and this is why we have spent so long perfecting the materials we use in our exotic cores. Making these in such small quantities has also proved a challenge from some aspects of our sourcing, however we believe it has all been worth it.

Ultimate
The Ultimate comes with all the additions of the Reference model, but also uses 99.99% pure solid silver wiring throughout the critical signal path. Silver as a conductor has the advantage of a more revealing and transparent reproduction of the music, however care needs to be taken to ensure that this is delivered in a complete and unified manner as sections of silver in a component in isolation rarely provide a benefit. Finding the right dielectric (insulation) for the cables is also critical to extract the best from this expensive material. Our choice of dielectric enables the ‘skin effect’ associated with incompatible insulation to be rendered almost non existent. This helps to bring the music to a tighter and more cohesive performance, here conventional cables tend to render the small details essential for the whole piece to really hang together in a muddled and incongruent way.

GT
GT Specification is the final step to perfection and to achieve this we have redesigned and build a more significant power supply that is housed in a completely separate box, matching the Syren II enclosure. The layout puts the power supply in it’s own housing, which allows us to place the components in their perfect orientation, and to shield the stages from cross interference. We have also wired the entire unit with 99.99% pure silver wire to be absolutely certain that the maximum possible performance is achieved. This has the effect of making silences darker and dynamic shifts in the music even more dramatic, and with a good recording this is phenomenal. Graham has described the improvements with the power supply as a little like cleaning your windows: You did not necessarily notice they were blocking any light, until afterwards. Well this power supply is like opening the French doors and looking straight out into the sunshine!

Voyager

Voyager

The Tron Voyager is a unique and very special amplifier, and has been a personal project for Graham for many years; as the concept of an OTA circuit he found both intriguing and challenging. It is a true OTA (One Tube per channel Amplifier). There are only three valves in the whole amplifier: one output valve per channel for audio and a rectifier valve in the power supply.

The Voyager is the simplest of amplifiers made today, it is the closest you can get to the theoretically perfect "wire with gain". Simplicity is both an opportunity and a challenge; if you listen to a chorus of voices all merging into a coherent sound then one or two imperfections are lost in the shadow of the whole. Whereas a closely micro-phoned solo performance is totally exposed and naked, there is simply nowhere to hide, every imperfection or aberration is noticed. The OTA with such a simple circuit is the same and Graham has spent many nights working into the small hours listening and adjusting to get the whole to work as one. In the words of Graham “every tiny change affects the tone, personality and colour of the performance, and with such a simple circuit you can literally hear the differences in the solder types used. It has been incredibly frustrating, but ultimately so rewarding to find the perfect balance for the circuit. I have never learned so much in one project as I have with the OTA, and I named the amplifier the Voyager in recognition of this”

This has the effect of making silences darker and dynamic shifts in the music even more dramatic, and with a good recording this is phenomenal. I would describe this improvement by making the analogy to film photography; a good print film can have rich beautiful colours and a great tonal range, but when you compare it to a great slide film the depth and richness of the picture just takes your breath away.

 

Discovery

Discovery

The key to building a truly magical amplifier is to maximise the dynamics in the signal and minimise any corruption in the process of amplification. Graham's designs are very concise, using the shortest possible signal path. The Discovery, rated conservatively at 8 watts, is constructed with three carefully divided partitions to eliminate the disruptive effect of magnetic, mechanical and electrical fields for the critical aspects of the circuit. The amplifier is built around the famous 300B valve, that has only three resistors in the circuit and not one capacitor in the signal path. Graham has long been a fan of the 300B valve like many others, but wanted to try to resolve some of it’s apparent weaknesses.

Graham described the development of the amplifier as one of discovery. “There has always been a magical and beautiful richness to the tonal textures possible in the middle frequencies with the 300B valve, however I wanted to discover how to get it to stretch itself in the lower and upper frequencies with the same magic. I would describe the 300B as a little lazy, if you push it too hard it complains, and if you don’t challenge it then it is happy to relax. I honestly feel like I now have discovered the real personality within the valve and the circuit I developed entices a performance from this valve that is truly unique and captivating”

The choice of individual components was also a challenge to ensure the circuit stayed alive and dynamic without smothering the delicate agility of the valve to uncover rich tonal texture. All the components are hard wired and of the highest quality available as well as being oriented to limit interference. Most are specially made to order like the strip wound C core transformers and chokes that are all hand wound. The amplifier takes over 200 hours to carefully assemble, and Graham enjoys the meticulous and intricate work that allows him to focus in an almost Zen like manner. The real pleasure from the build is however the first time that the circuit is switched on, watching those valves wake up and prepare to sing, as you place a favourite LP on the turntable; musical bliss.

Telstar

Telstar

The Tron Telstar 211 is named after the famous communications satellite "Telstar", as well as the 211(VT4-C) tube being a famous communications tube. Amplification is achieved by a 6C45 single triode driving the 211/VT4-C output valve. Graham describes the 211 valve as behaving like a racehorse “The 211 valve has an enormous heart and can provide surges of power and dynamic contrast like almost no other, however it can easily be abused and the result is more of a workhorse than thoroughbred. I have worked very hard to capture the best from the valve in a way that allows it to breathe and run free; ensuring the loading is not equivalent to a cart for a racehorse.”

The choice of components in the circuit was also critical to ensure that the dynamic tension in the music was not lost or encumbered; Graham remarks “with such a powerful valve the temptation is to get it to do all the work unaided.” The power output we obtain is deliberately lower than we know is possible, and this is really to ensure that there is headroom for the dynamic changes that make the right music piece so dramatic and captivating. It produces a conservative 12 watts of power and is completely free of any feedback, which allows the circuit to remain both agile and simple.

The 211/VT4-C is transformer coupled to the loudspeaker by a specially made output transformer. The power supply is a valve design and is connected to a pi filter making a very smooth and quiet experience. Measured hum on the output is so low that it is completely inaudible even on loudspeakers of 110dB efficiency (Avantgarde Trio Omegas). Custom made components are used throughout Telstar and these are hard wired between stages, which is labour intensive but allows for the most efficient signal path. The 211 valve is a very special valve, we believe you will understand why the moment you here the Telstar.

The Telstar can be upgraded to the Reference specification to further improve the musical performance from all your musical sources. The output transformers form a critical stage in the amplification and in a power amplifier drive the output to the speakers. Ensuring that we maximise this element is critical and so to further improve the voyager we have specially developed some unique non-standard core material that we keep as proprietary knowledge and simply refer to as exotic. These exotic core transformers help to lift the musical performance and enhance the vibrancy and intimacy of the music, in a way that just makes everything sound more immediate and tactile. We also see the use of these cores in the output transformers for the power amplifiers delivering a greater sense of control and power of grip over the speakers; the effect is more like a speaker upgrade than an amplifier.

Ultimate

The Ultimate comes with all the additions of the Reference model, but also uses 99.99% pure solid silver wiring throughout the critical signal path. Silver as a conductor has the advantage of a more revealing and transparent reproduction of the music, however care needs to be taken to ensure that this is delivered in a complete and unified manner as sections of silver in a component in isolation rarely provide a benefit. Finding the right dielectric (insulation) for the cables is also critical to extract the best from this expensive material. Our choice of dielectric enables the ‘skin effect’ associated with incompatible insulation to be rendered almost non existent. This helps to bring the music to a tighter and more cohesive performance, here conventional cables tend to render the small details essential for the whole piece to really hang together in a muddled and incongruent way.

GT

GT Specification is the final step to perfection and to achieve this we have redesigned and built a more significant power supply that is carefully laid out in the existing chassis. This layout is very labour intensive to install but allows me to place the components in their perfect orientation. We have developed specifically designed capacitors for the circuit as readily available samples were not able to maximise the circuit Graham had been working on. We have also wired the whole of the power supply with 99.99% pure silver wire to be absolutely certain that the maximum performance possible is achieved. This has the effect of making silences darker and dynamic shifts in the music even more dramatic, and with a good recording this is phenomenal. I would describe this improvement by making the analogy to film photography; a good print film can have rich beautiful colours and a great tonal range, but when you compare it to a great slide film the depth and richness of the picture just takes your breath away.
